What's a wedding theme? Is it necessary to have one, and if I want one, how do I select a theme for my wedding? It's in 14 months and I don't have money for a planner, and truthfully I'd like to do it all myself. I just don't know where to begin.
Please help me get started?

Dear Clueless,
A theme is a subject that ties each aspect of the wedding together. In the case of a wedding it can be a color that is in the floral arrangements, the wedding party's clothes, at the reception site, on the cake, on the attendant's clothes, etc. It could be a theme like Christmas with holly, red and green interspersed and festive colors are worn. Or a beach theme for a destination wedding with shells, sand and tropical colors. It is not necessary to have a theme, but it often makes the planning process easier and brings some continuity to a wedding and reception. Some ideas for where to find a theme are:
1. A design or pattern - such as the design on a ring, argyle or paisley
2. The initials of the bride and groom
3. A season
4. A holiday
5. A favorite flower
6. A location
7. A favorite event
8. A personal memory
9. A favorite color
Just select something meaningful to you and your groom and everything will fall into place. You can incorporate your theme in invitations, favors, flowers, runners, reception linens, tableware, centerpieces and decorations, the cake and any thing else you can think of. The ideas are limitless. Just enjoy the process!
