Ask Allee ~ Expensive Gift Registry

Dear Allee,

This isn't about my wedding, but the bridal registry of a friend. The problem is that she's registered at the poshest store in town, seemingly forgetting that most of her guests are making substantially less than middle five figure incomes! I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I do have to eat too!

Signed,
Hungry in Philly

Dear Philly,

You don't have to go hungry, really! I have a few suggestions for you. First, who says you have to use the bridal registry? It is merely a convenience for guests so they have an idea of what the couple wants/needs. Next, how about using the registry to find the items elsewhere - hopefully at a substantial discount? Or perhaps you and a few other hungry co-workers can chip in on one of the less expensive registry items, which will help preserve your budgets and the bride will get exactly what she registered for.

Maybe you could abandon the idea of the registry altogether and purchase a gift card for the bride and groom to someplace like Walmart or Target where they can purchase everyday household items like toothpaste, soap, etc. The daily necessities can really add up and these items often get overlooked until you need them.

So relax, you don't have to go hungry to come up with a fantastic wedding gift, just think outside the box a bit.

Good luck!
Allee
