Entry #4 ~ March 2, 2002
~ Just Right

Dear Charon,

I am so proud of you and all of the cute things you are doing and saying these days. I can't resist sharing it all with others. Here are a few of the things I've been bragging about lately.

I like to call up people and have you count in French for them. The other day, we were talking to Auntie Katy, and I put you on, urging you to perform your cool new trick. By the time you got to "cinq (five)," I realized she'd heard this already last week.

One day, you were walking around stiffly, your shoulders hunched up under your ears. When I asked you who you were, you exclaimed, "Mr. Rogers!" As I watched you some more, I decided you had his persona down pat. You even pretended to change sweaters, hanging one up in an imaginary closet before pulling another one out. I now brag to everyone that if you can do Mr. Rogers, you must have amazing acting talent.

You drew your first circle while we were playing at the drop-in family center. I oohed and ahhed, and the teacher just looked at me, smiling to herself at my pride over this beautiful, crooked "O" shape. And yes, I took the paper home to save in your baby book.

Last month, we took care of Uncle Bill and Auntie Dawn's cats for them while they were vacationing in Texas. When we walked in the first time, all three cats were by the door waiting for us. You sighed, "Oh! Cute!" You immediately went for their tails, and when I told you that wasn't a good idea, you decided to play with all of their toys instead. We went and got them cat food later that week, and we had to stop and play in the kitty toys aisle, too. When I called to tell Bill and Dawn how their cats were doing, it was as much to brag about you as to reassure them.

On Thursday, we went to play during the Toddler Time at the rec center. At one point, you tripped and bumped your head. You seemed okay after a short cry and a long hug, but I was worried about the goose egg that was forming. "Does your bump hurt, hon?" I asked you, gently stroking your head. "I'm okay, Mom," you replied. You sounded so grown up. I made my way around the gym, telling all of the concerned moms who had seen your fall what you had said.

I love it when you do cute things in public. You used to be so shy and scared of strangers. Today, you decided to say, "Goodbye," to several of the customers in Dino's. Then, you told each of them, "So long." Some people responded to you by grinning, and some said goodbye back to you. Others were a little embarrassed to be addressed by a stranger, and pretended you were talking to someone else. Your daddy and I beamed at each other with pride, and I'm sure we looked like we thought you were the greatest kid ever.

You've been using the phrase "just right" a lot lately. One night, when I started rocking you to sleep, you looked up at me and said, "Charon's mom. Just right for Charon." It took all the willpower I had to force myself to stay in that chair and get you to sleep before getting on the phone to call all of the neighbors with that cute story. (Actually, I kept this story just to myself for awhile. That one was too special to share right away.)

You sure are something special.

I love you,
Mom
