Crochet Lace Snowflake
Submitted by Miche

Crochet Lace Snowflake Supplies needed:

  • Bedspread weight yarn in white
  • Size 8 steel crochet hook
  • Wide eye needle for threading in loose ends
  • Sugar and water, starch and water or a commercial stiffener (I like the light stiffness and easy clean up that a sugar stiffener allows.)
  • Foam board and strong pins
  • Permanent spray adhesive (if desired)
  • Microfine glitter in holographic white (if desired)
  • Transparent thread for hanging

Directions:

  1. ch 8, sl st to join into a ring.

  2. ch 1, *sc, ch 3, tr, ch 3 in ring* repeat from * to * 5 times. Join with sl st to first sc.

  3. sl st in next 3 chs and tr. *sc in tr, ch 12, sl st in 9 ch from hook, ch 3* repeat from * to * 5 times. Join with sl st to first sc.

  4. ch 3, *ch 5, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in ch 9 loop, ch 5, dc in sc* Repeat from * to * 5 times. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of initial ch 3.

  5. Finish off.

  6. Thread in loose ends and trim.

Stiffening:

  1. Mix 2 parts sugar with 1 part water in a saucepan. Bring to just a boil then remove from heat. The sugar should have completely dissolved.

  2. Dip snowflake in sugar solution and make sure the thread is thoroughly wet.

  3. Lift snowflake out of the solution and blot the excess with paper towels.

  4. Start pinning one point to the foam board. Stretch the opposite point and pin in place. You may need to angle the pins toward the center of the snowflake for them to hold. Pin all points and any other areas that need definition.

  5. Allow to dry overnight. The sugar stiffening will provide a small amount of glitter from the crystallized sugar. If you desire more sparkle follow the next steps.

Adding sparkle (if desired):

  1. Spray a thin layer of adhesive and either sprinkle microfine glitter over the snowflake or dip the snowflake into a bowl of glitter then shake off excess glitter.

  2. Allow time to dry then repeat with the other side.

  3. Using a pin poke through the natural holes in the snowflake to remove excess glitter and provide definition.

  4. Tie on a piece of transparent thread for hanging.
