SNOWMAN WASHCLOTH ORNAMENT
Contributed by Jenny McCutcheon
Materials:
- 1 white washcloth (the thinner the better)
- Small scrap polar fleece or homespun fabric
- Buttons in three different colors
- Scrap of yellow or orange craft foam or felt
- Scrap of black/brown craft foam (or a couple of tiny sticks from your yard)
- 2 wiggly eyes, small black buttons for eyes or black thread to sew on eyes
- glue (hot glue gun or craft glue)
- thread
Directions:
- Lay washcloth flat (I had to iron mine!). My washcloth had an imprinted design down two sides. So, I found it best to fold those two sides in, meeting in the center. Fold in half again so that there are four layers of fabric. Fold in half again in the other directions bringing two shortest sides together at top. You should now have eight layers of fabric with the fold at the bottom.
- Use a piece of thread or floss to tie the top edges together. Use another piece to tie in the middle to divide the snowman into two snowballs. You could even use rubber bands for these two steps since they're covered up with fabric.
- Cut a strip of polar fleece or homespun fabric to a 10x1 1/2 " strip. Put around neck, and cross the two sides to one side of neck. Glue in place.
- Glue two small black buttons on face to represent two pieces of coal eyes, or use wiggly eyes or sew on eyes.
- Cut a carrot shape from orange foam or felt. Glue on face.
- Glue three buttons down the front of the snowman.
- Cut two stick arms from black or brown foam, or use two small twigs from your yard. Glue in place at sides of snowman. (Note: I found it easiest to use hot glue on this step and to glue the "arms" between two folds of fabric.)
- Cut another strip of fabric measuring 3x6". Glue or sew two shorter sides together. Sew a running stitch about one inch from top edge. Pull stitch tight to gather top of hat. Or tie with a small piece of twine. Fold up about 1/2" at the bottom to form a "brim". Glue in place on top of snowman's head.
- For an added decorative touch, snip some fringe along the edges of each end of the scarf. Do the same above the gathering line of the hat.
- Use a piece of floss or metallic thread to make a loop to glue to the back of the snowman's hat for hanging. You could also use a needle to run the thread/floss through the hat fabric for a more secure hanger.
