Submitted by postcardgirl

Amish Quilt Square OrnamentEach finished ornament is 3 x 3 inches

Materials needed (for each ornament):

  • Scraps of fabric for patchwork
  • 1/4 inch wide ribbon for hanging loops
  • batting
  • one 3 1/2 inch square of fabric for back

E (2 1/2" x 1")
4
F (1" square)
4

Piecing Steps (make sure to trim to even/square up your shapes after piecing/pressing):

  1. Sew one B to opposite sides of A (see Diagram 1). Press seams open. Sew one B to the other two sides of A, forming center unit. Press seams open.
  2. Sew one C to opposite sides of center unit (see Diagram 2). Press seams open.
  3. Sew one D to each end of the two remaining C's (see Diagram 2). Press seams open.
  4. Matching seams at intersections, sew C-D units to top and bottom of center unit. Press seams open.
  5. Sew one E to opposite sides of center unit (see Diagram 3). Press seams open.
  6. Sew one F to each end of the two remaining E's (see Diagram 3). Press seams open.
  7. Matching seams at intersections, sew E-F units to top and bottom of center unit. Press seams open.

To finish into quilted ornaments:

  1. To make a loop for hanging, fold a 1- 1/2 inch piece of 1/4 inch ribbon in half and pin in place in one corner.
  2. Place right side of pieced part to right side of 4- 1/2 inch backing square together. Sew around three sides of both layers, using 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn right sides out, stuff with batting, then hand stitch fourth side closed.

alternate finishing looks:

  • Although I chose to add just a thin layer of batting, you can add more and make the ornament puffier.
  • If you don't want to quilt it, that's not even necessary.
  • You can use polyester fiberfill instead of batting for a more pillow-like effect.
  • For an added effect, add lace or other trim around the outside edge of the ornament
